Speech and Language Support

A student is enrolled in a Speech and Language Support Program when assessment by a multidisciplinary team identifies speech and language needs, and the Individualized Education Program planning team determines that these needs can be met through Speech and Language. Therapy focus is on disabilities of language, articulation, voice and fluency that are present to such a degree that educational performance is affected and the problem is significantly disabling to the student.

Enrollment for speech and language therapy follows an in-depth assessment that employs formal and informal measures considered appropriate for the student. Programming is provided in individual and small group therapy sessions. Classroom sessions are provided to reinforce individual therapy content, as well as the language and concepts of classroom instruction.

Speech and Language Pathologists that are specialists in Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology design alternative systems for specific students to provide a means for effective communication. This may include the use of gesture/sign language systems, computers, language boards, and/or electronic equipment. Consultation on the design and on-going use of augmentative communication is available to the Speech and Language Pathologist.
