By utilizing the existing WAN connections from multiple district locations, the CAIU is able to offer secure internet access to Districts in the IU15 footprint. These connections are secured using Cisco’s Firewall Service Module (FWSM) Security Appliance. The Cisco FWSM Appliance delivers a multi-layered defense for large enterprise networks through rich integrated security services, including stateful inspection firewalling and protocol and application inspection. The FWSM also provides each customer with their own Virtual Firewall that can be managed independently, by the CAIU staff, or a combination of the two.

 The CAIU offers Internet2 access along with normal Internet Services. Internet 2 is a consortium led by 207 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow’s Internet. Internet2 is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today’s Internet in its infancy.
